Yesterday afternoon I went on the latest Akron2Akron neighborhood walking tour - this time - Middlebury. We started at the Open Assembly of God Church and the non-religious organization LINKS. There were long time residents of the area helping out with the tour. It was interesting to hear about the way the neighborhood had changed over time, its challenges and the wonderful effort that the church and LINKS are putting in to make it a better place.
LINKS
It was a beautiful day for a walk - with the trees in full bloom.
Rounding the Corner
"Jewett Park" - we were discussing what caused the neighborhood to slide downhill. One of the problems is that it seemed to go from a neighborhood of families to one of more absentee land lords with renters. Everyone seemed optimistic that it is now on the upswing though. It was mentioned that a few years ago this park wouldn't even have been very safe to be at during the day.
Vacant Lots
Discussing the site of the former home.
There was such a wealth of historic information.
"The Pastor Playing"
The site of a former gas station that her family owned.
Talking about the huge impact nearby Goodyear had on the are over time.
This was the neighborhood school - it is now owned by Oriana.
"Blimp"
Gardens.
Asparagus
I love seeing these community gardens pop all over. Especially in neighborhoods like this.
