After our bike event we headed up to the Hiawatha National Forest. It was very pretty up this way - everything just feels different from home. We stopped in Munising at a brewery before jumping on the ferry and heading to Grand Island. Grand Island was recommended to us by a few friends who had been up this way before. We arrived in the early evening and rode to our rustic cabin. We got settled in and then walked down to the beach. The water in Lake Superior is stunning and I was snapping a bunch of photos before we walked back to the cabin and had a fire. In the morning it was drizzling but we still went out for our ride around the island. The ride all the way around the perimeter is about 20 miles.
By George Brewing. There was a pizza place across the street we ordered food from that was amazing.
On the ferry. The ferry ride is real short - just a few minutes. The price of the ferry includes the day pass to be on the island.
You do pay more for the bicycles.
I was shooting these with my 16mm.
The ride - I will post a link to my video with a bunch of information about cycling on the island and its rich history at the bottom of this post.
The water and the cliffs are simply stunning.
It looks like an inviting place to swim - but Superior doesnt ever get warm.
The water looks straight up tropical.
There are a number of historic structures on the island.
The small but interesting visitor center. Also - the only place to get water.
If you are ever in this area this side trip is totally worth it.
