Marietta by Backroads

Marietta
I had only ever been through Marietta for work and never really had the chance to check it out - so I suggested it to Erin for a quick Fall get-a-way. We set Google Maps for "no highways" and took off on Sunday morning. It was a beautiful drive roughly mirroring the path of the Ohio and Erie Canal. We made a few stops on the way down and the way back and took in Marietta's long history on foot and on the bicycles.

JAFB Wooster
Our first stop was one of our favorite breweries - JAFB Wooster.

We were back on the road and traveling through the country when the urge for a bathroom stop hit. I saw the sign that we had entered Millersburg and said "hey, there is a brewery here too".

Our next stop was the "Apple Butter Stirrin' Festival" - which we went to pretty much because it was called "The Apple Butter Stirrin' Festival". It took place in the restored canal town of Roscoe Village on the edge of Coshocton.

We arrived in Marietta and checked into our Air BnB then I rushed us out the door to catch the sunset on the Ohio River.

Our food at Marietta Brewing was good but the beer was pretty un-inspiring - not bad - just very 1996.

In the morning we stopped in the city cemetery because I wanted to see the Hopewell Era ancient Indian Mound. The founders built the cemetery around this mound to preserve it. Marietta sits where the Muskingum River empties into the Ohio - which was a huge Hopewell site. The mounds were supposed to be preserved but many were later destroyed or built over. Of course.

Marietta is the oldest settlement in the Northwest Territory and the oldest city in Ohio.

The city was originally a very important shipping location - but was later supplanted in importance by Cincinnati. Marietta

Georgetown Brewing
After our bike cruise around Marietta we hit the road. Erin found this beautiful brewer/winery - we had a beer and a wood-fired pizza.
Georgetown Brewing Southside Brewing at Georgetown Winery had an amazing view overlooking Cambridge - this photo does not do it justice.

We took our time driving the country roads back home - is there anything more beautiful than a Autumn road trip in Ohio?
