For a number of years we have been going on a bike tour around 4th of July. This year we decided to take on the C&O Trail and the GAP Trail. The C&O runs from DC to Cumberland where it changes over to the GAP Trail to Pittsburg. We spent a night in Pitt then took the early morning train to DC where we spent the night hanging out with a friend and checking out the city before hitting the trail in the morning. We were not trying to rush the trip - we wanted to enjoy the ride. We did spend three days riding the C&O and only two riding the GAP as we wanted to spend a little more time along the canal history.
After getting settled at our Air BnB in Pitt we rode out to Dancing Gnome Brewing for diner. (as always - cycling footage over on the YT channel).
As usual the Amtrak train was illegaly delayed by frieght - so I took the chance to photograph the old train station.
Trains are the civilized way to travel.
Union Station in Washington
Lunch in DC
Dinner with Gabriel - a cycling bud who lives in DC now.
Mile Zero the next morning
We stopped in Georgetown for coffee - I was already caffinated so I took a little photo walk.
Gabriel joined us for part of the day.
I had no idea how pretty the Patomic River is right outside of the city.
Everyone told us to park the bikes and take the hike at Great Falls - it did not dissapoint.
Lunch at White's Ferry
We were told people take photos at the mile markers that match their age - so we did it.
Dinner somewhere
Harper's Ferry - this place was awesome (our camp spot was just a mile or two from here.
Apparently Thomas Jefferson stood on this rock and something important happened.
The new rig was working well.
We wpent a decent amount of time exploring Harper's Ferry in the morning.
John Brown's Fort
We broke off the trail to hit up this brewery for lunch.
The C&O Trail was fairly rustic - which we enjoyed having appropriatte bikes.
4th of July in Cumberland - one of the only spots open.
This camp spot on the edge of town was pretty cool - we were able to see fireworks all over.
This is looking towards the camp spot and Cumberland in the background from an old train bridge.
Breakfast in Cumberland. Brad did not carry on - he had Covid.
This is pretty much the end opf photos. There were chances of rain the rest of the trip so I packed away the camera and strictly used the GoPro on the GAP Trail.
This was a late lunch stop on our way back home.
